Purpose Statement:
The purpose of the Counseling and Education Program is to increase the safety and healing and decrease the isolation of victims of domestic violence and their children through individual and group advocacy and supportive counseling in a safe, community setting.
 

Support Groups: 

  • Women's: Psycho-educational support groups for adult survivors of domestic violence.  Topics include the forms of abuse, power and control, the cycle of violence, why men batter, characteristics of a batterer, impact on children, barriers survivors face in leaving, safety planning, community resources, victim rights, protection orders, the legal system, and healthy relationships.  Groups offered Thursday evenings and Friday mornings for both English and Spanish speaking women.  Childcare provided during evening groups. 
  • Children's: Education and support for children and their moms in separate groups which meet simultaneously.  The children's groups help them to overcome the effects of domestic violence; teach new ways to express feelings and resolve conflict; and how to plan for safety.  The moms groups (for both English and Spanish speaking moms) educate parents on the effects of domestic violence on children, effective parenting, offers support, community resources and safety planning.  Groups are held on Monday evenings.  Childcare is provided for younger children.

Individual and Family Advocacy/Counseling:

  • Individual counseling for adults, adolescents, and children to help them heal from the effects of domestic violence.  Sliding fee scale.
  • Parent and child counseling for the protective parent and their children.  Sliding fee scale.
  • Legal Advocacy


Mountain Outreach:

  • Individual counseling for women, effected by domestic violence, who live in the mountain area.
  • Support group for women, affected by domestic violence, who live in the mountain area.

To Make A Referral:
Domestic violence survivors are asked to call (303) 462-1060 to schedule an appointment with a counselor. 
 

July 2010 - June 2011 Accomplishments:

Counseling and Education

  • Served 287 women and children in domestic violence support groups at Karlis Family Center. 
  • Provided counseling for 21 individuals and assisted 163 callers through the Mountain Outreach Program. 
  • Responded to a total of 2,751 Information & Referral calls.
